I was commissioned to produce a ‘mascot’ for an acquaintance that will be displayed on his upcoming site as sort of a visual identity. The moniker of the site is ‘Codeape’ hence the ape holding a laptop computer. Originally, I started off hellbent on producing a realist representation of a primate but scrapped that in favour of my own style, which was why I was hired in the first place. Lesson learned: be yourself in every aspect of your work. If a client hires you based on what they’ve seen then chances are that is exactly what they’re after!

An update that doesn’t involve Super Horse! I came up with this green pod-like character late one night and decided to re-work him and add a background. The boots remind me of the type that Mr. Men wore… you can’t go wrong with a stylish and practical brown boot!

Super Horse once owned a yacht called ‘Sweet Freedom’. He sold it to singer, Michael McDonald who later wrote a song about it.

A lot of people ask me where Super Horse originated. Above is the very first incarnation of him; black felt tip marker on fluorescent yellow office stationery.

Super Horse was originally a scribble on a Post-It note for a co-worker. He still resides on a wall (at my last place of employment) which is known as the ‘Super Horse Wall’. A few people were confused by the horse concept and some erroneously began referring to my sketches as ‘Pretty Pony’.

I shared an office space with three other designers and we’d go a little stir-crazy in the afternoon and come up with scenarios that Super Horse could star in next. I’m not too sure what the final count of Super Horse Post-It comics came to, but there were quite a few. This year, I decided to make a conscious (and conscientious) effort to concentrate on my much-neglected illustration skills and Super Horse was resurrected but this time in a digital format.
